Make an Impression
Genesis 18:17-19
Though few of us want to admit it, a lot of who we are is wrapped up into who our fathers are. Who was your father? Was he a man of character? Was he gentle or angry or distant? Impossible to please? Yes. He's affected a significant part of who you are today. In ancient times, the Jews understood their confession "Abraham is our father" was central to their identity as people of the promise. The same is true of all of us. Dads play a huge role in our self identity, self confidence, and self loathing. Dads always make an impression on their kids. So let's do it on purpose.

    God Shall be Found Faithful
    Judges 14-16
Samson is a mixed bag and there's no way around it. His exploits bounce all over, from illicit romance and marriage, to prostitution; from bets and brawls to enraged vengeance. It's actually tough to find anything in Samson's judgeship that is praiseworthy, and yet, God called him and God used him. I'm convinced that God used Samson, not because of his faithful behavior; but in spite of his faithless behavior.

    The Birth of Samson
    Judges 13
The more I study about the life of Samson, the more I'm convinced that Samson gets thrown under the bus in our Bible classes. His calling as a Nazarite - for life - was important in how God was able to use him to liberate Israel. Come back tonight, and we will geek out on the nuances of the Nazarite vow together.

    Bargaining with God
    Judges 11:29-40
Jephthah is, in every way, a self-made man. Rough around the edges. Perhaps gruff and short tempered, but everything he has, he has accomplished. As a self made man he bargains with God to ensure victory in battle, but the consequences of that deal are unspeakably difficult.

A Christmas You’ve Probably Never Heard of
    Revelation 12:13-17
Keep your nativity scene boxed up this year. Instead of a manger, camel, and three wise men; replace them with a dragon, a river, the earth and a woman refugee. The birth of Christ is a maneuver in the middle of an immortal epoch between God and Satan. Gird your loins. Prepare for battle. Go watch The Hobbit to get in the right frame of mind as we explore Revelation 12 and the birth of Christ.

    From Zero to Hero
    Judges 11:1-28
Have you ever wondered how God chooses whom He uses? Jephthah will make you ask. Without a doubt, he had a troubled upbringing. A victim of the choices of his father and his brothers, Jephthah had no advantages in life, and made troubling choices as a result, but God chose him.

    Father to Son: Abimelech
    Judges 9:1-57
Israel clamored for a king. They begged for Gideon or any of his children, and Abimelech rose to the occasion. But no leader is better than an unqualified leader, as Abimelech's murderous legacy reveals. We will discuss this, and more tonight.

    One Generation to Another
    Psalm 145:1-7
Sociologists call it Generational Fragmentation. Basically, it means people in modern society spend less time with people outside their generation. Even in church we can gather together like oil and water in the same bottle. This morning we will discuss the blessings of having all our generations under one roof.

    The Greatest Gift
    Matthew 7:7-11
Most kids have parents who love them unconditionally. Parents don't need to be reminded to care, protect, and provide for their kids. Mommy guilt is a real thing. Most mothers feel like they don't do enough. Kids do need time and attention, but the most overlooked gift we can give our kids is not more time, more programs, or more things. It's you. A parent who is a great person. More often than not, kids take on your values, priorities, politics, and faith.

    Wisdom and Stature
    Luke 2:41-46; 51-52
Becoming a mom or a dad is easy. Being a father or a mother is a lot harder, for many reasons. One of the greatest challenges for parents today is the outsourcing of parenthood. Schools. Sports. Church programs. It happens so frequently that we rarely acknowledge how much of a responsibility our children are; and not just "providing food and shelter." Kids develop their intellect, faith, character, vocation, relationships. Luke says of Jesus that he "increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor of God and man." (Lk 2:52). Through all that, parents guard, guide, and direct. It's a big job.

    Rejoicing with Christ
    Luke 15:3-17
God loves us. He always wants the best for us, and make no mistake, He is active in His efforts to redeem and rescue us. Even from ourselves and our own mistakes. The Bible makes it clear that often, we can be the stumbling block that keeps people from turning to Christ. This morning we will explore some of the ways the church can help each other turn to, and be restored to Christ.

    Q & A: Where is a woman’s place in the church?
    1 Timothy 2:11-12
This verse has come up in conversation with some friends. Where is a woman’s place in the church? What about women who are not naturally quiet? (one of whom I will gladly admit I am) Are we sinning?

    Enjoy the Futility of Life
    Ecclesiastes 1:1-9
If there were two books in the Bible that preachers would rather do without, it's Song of Solomon, and Ecclesiastes. Song of Solomon gets read privately, just not discussed. Ecclesiastes confuses and frustrates people, so they typically ignore it. This morning we will explore the message of Ecclesiastes. Be sure to do your light therapy and take vitamin D.

    Traditions and Taco Tuesday
    Joshua 4:20-24
Most of us have traditions in our lives. It's just the ebb and flow of how we live. But those traditions say a lot about who we are - and, surprisingly, they become guardrails for who your kids become! Family legacies often rest in family traditions. What is yours? (this is a tough question for newlyweds!) Are you doing your family traditions on purpose? Let's explore this some more this morning.

    Q & A: Soul/Spirit
Two weeks ago, after discussing the resurrection, several approached me to ask the same follow-up question: "What happens to my soul/spirit between the time it leaves my body at death and the second coming of Christ? Thanks." I do have a few other questions, but tackling this one on the heels of last time is most appropriate.

    Q & A: Asleep
    1 Thessalonians 4:13-18

Tonight we will tackle one question: "Can I get some background on 1 Thess. 4:13-18? What does Paul mean by saying “asleep”? What does “The dead in Christ will rise first” mean?" This is one of the clearest teachings of the resurrection in Scripture. A doctrine that most Christians do not understand, believe, or teach. So we will unpack the idea of the resurrection together - both what it is, and what it is not.
If you've got questions for us to tackle, feel free to pass them on to me - Facebook,
    email
, or even just a note after church!

    Q & A
We will take the next several Sunday evenings to revisit our Question and Answer series from May. I have several questions still in queue from last time, and have received a lot of positive feedback about this format for Sunday evening. The question we will look at tonight is: "Why isn’t it more common for Greek definitions of words in the NT to be taught in Bible classes so that when passages like 1 Cor.13:1-7 get read at weddings we (as Christians) understand that the “love” being talked about is not the romantic love between a husband and wife? This distinction would also help Jesus’ conversation with Peter in John 21:15-17 to make more sense to us."

    Faith in the Margins
    2 Corinthian 4:7-12

You and I are living in the middle of a seismic change in our country. For as long as we have been alive (you and I), the country has always believed that the church had the market cornered on morality and virtue. Even people who wouldn't be bothered with all the rules of church typically thought church a good thing, but no more. The Christian faith is moving to the margins. Today, the average American no longer thinks of Christians as moral people. We are backwards, superstitious, malevolent, bigoted, and hateful. This perception is being fueled by the antics of a few truly disturbing groups, but it is working. This morning, we will kick off our series on Perseverance as we talk about faith in the margins.
