Nothing Good is Going to Come From This
1 Samuel 25:1-12

When we find ourselves in a difficult circumstance, we usually have options. We can choose to either react or act. That is the purpose for on-going Bible study. We are filling our minds and hearts with knowledge that we will draw on when needed. David had a desire to do what is right, but in this narrative, we see trouble coming.

    It Isn’t Child’s Play
    Psalm 127:3-5

The Bible describes children as arrows in the hands of a warrior. I've shot arrows and I know for a fact that they don't go where they're supposed to. That's probably because I'm not an excellent archer. Greater skill, time, and attention is needed to launch an arrow and hit the bulls eye. Maybe you could argue that kids are the same. Most of us can have kids, but nurturing, teaching, and launching them is a lot harder. This morning we will go over some principles that will help your kids launch well.

He Must Increase and I Must Decrease
    1 Samuel 24:5-11

With the passing of days, complications in life ebb and flow. That means I must dig deeper in my faith as life becomes more complicated. Is there something there to dig out? That is what today is all about. We are to be active disciples, constantly changing and growing. When you get to the end of your days, that is all you will have.

    2 Peter 3:14 -18

Adding head knowledge carries the risk of legalism. Legalism is basically adding my own rules to God’s rules. My rules and my ideas are fine for me but I cannot bind them on others or expect others to feel compelled to follow them. Coming to scripture with my agenda can have dangerous consequences. Faithful disciples Examine the Scriptures Daily.

    Treasures in Heaven
    Luke 12:16-21; Luke 18:27-29

Sometimes I think we get the wrong answers because we're asking the wrong questions. Churches spend a lot of time with how people live life. While that's valuable to discuss, it's probably not nearly as valuable as asking why. All of us have the privilege to live life, but few of us will take the time to ask why?

Always Let Your Conscience Be Your Guide
    Mark 2:23-28

The statement above is wisdom given to the world by Carlo Collodi in the 1880’s. He wrote The Adventures of Pinocchio, the story of a wooden puppet who becomes a real boy. The struggles of life often call for great wisdom and courage. The conscience can be a good guide, if the conscience is morally trained by the knowledge of God…head knowledge and heart knowledge.

    Blameless in Christ
    Colossians 1:15-23

It's seductive to believe that I am a self-made man. I've pulled myself up from my boot straps. It's an American value: We are resilient. We are accomplished. And we have a tendency to believe we did it all ourselves. Unfortunately, we sometimes bring these values into our spiritual life. Scripture is clear: our righteousness is not our doing. It is the work of Christ. To claim otherwise is to commit fraud.

You Need to Know More Than the Enemy
    Proverbs 1:1-7

Someone once said ours is a battle of the heart and mind. This is a true statement, especially concerning the battle of the mind. Knowledge is Spiritual Power. You will seek out what your heart loves. For those who love God, we seek knowledge from the Scripture which communicates to us the Mind of God.

    Guilty
    Romans 1-6

This one point is driven home: we are guilty. Often, we think that the message of Jesus is good. And it is! But it has a context. It's good news only when we understand and believe our guilt. In fact, the gospel actually starts out as really bad news before it turns good. Tonight, we will explore the unpopular idea that we are guilty.

    The Finding of the Book
    Luke 10:21-24

In 2 Peter 1:5-7, Peter encourages a type of faith that is constantly growing and changing. Once we come to faith, however difficult that process may be, we have only just begun. God puts within us the desire to do good with our lives, but good has to be directed by knowledge that comes from above.

In Him We Live and Move and Exist
    1 Samuel 20

What happens when things appear to be getting out of hand and out of your control? Sometimes we become desperate and do things in a frantic way. Other times we turn to our faith and make a commitment to do things differently, hopefully bringing about some sort of change. A third option is what we see in Jonathan, son of King Saul. His actions are of a person who knows that in all things, God is in control.

    God is Good
    Psalm 107:1-2

This is perhaps the most foundational confession about God in our day. God is good. When we see it clearly, believers live courageous lives. They reflect the love and grace of God around them. But when they don't, they become a distortion of the divine image. This morning we will be reminded about the goodness of God.

    Losing Life’s Purpose
    1 Samuel 18

Faith brings a purpose in life that is desperately needed. When you hear the latest tragic news story, you might conclude that the person who did the unspeakable act had no purpose in life. I say that person did have a purpose; the problem was he didn’t grow up in a culture that was very discerning about a person’s purpose.

    A Work in Progress
    2 Peter 1:5-11

No matter how put together anyone looks, we are all a work in progress. Nobody has arrived. Paul puts it this way: "Only let us live up to what we have already attained" (Philippians 3:16). It's true of our careers, our families, our faith, and it's even true of Lakeview, as a church. This morning we will appoint some additional leaders. An exciting moment in any church! But the task ahead is huge: to help our deacons and elders build up the church and improve our witness to our community.

    This Is Your Big Chance
    1 Samuel 17

This most popular of stories from scripture reveals many lessons about bold faith. David’s action establishes him as a hero of faith. Most heroes don’t set out to be heroes. They usually just do what needs to be done.

What Does God Want From Me?
    1 Samuel 16:7
Growing as a Christian means that I am consistently asking this question. It is not that God is hard to please, or that it is a great mystery that must be deciphered by going on some sort of quest. What God wants is really quite simple. I just like to make things difficult.
